Endgame is Fanfiction short story set in the BBC’s Sherlock universe.
A child psychologist is asked to sit in on the questioning of her client, a nine-year old boy, traumatised by finding his father stabbed to death. The child’s mother is being held for the murder and the case against her looks water-tight, unless her son can be persuaded to tell what he knows. But the only way to communicate with the traumatised child is through his great obsession, chess, and only one detective speaks chess fluently enough to understand what he has to say.
Warnings: The author chooses not to warn.
BBC’s Sherlock is, of course, AU: the characters exist, in 2010, in a world which never read about Sherlock Holmes, Dr John Watson, Professor Moriarty and Mrs Hudson in the Strand magazine from 1887 onwards. As a result, the detective story developed rather differently; Agatha Christie never wrote “Death in the Clouds” and Doctor Who never riffed off its classic Fontana cover in “The Unicorn and the Wasp”.
