Author's Notes - Endgame by A.J. Hall

Alexander Alekhine, who died 1946 in circumstances which may well have been murder (the only World Chess chmapion to die still holding the title) was summed up by Bill Hartston as “An arrogant alcoholic womaniser with a pronounced liking for cats.” Like practically everyone else who has ever held the title, he was madder than a box of frogs and his political opinions bear no scrutiny whatsoever. No approval of anything other than his playing capability is intended by the references to him in this fic.
